Tonight I saw something I have never seen before. The full moon has a big halo, and two luminous protruberances - half circles - one at noon and one at the 4:00 position. There must be a name, and an explanation for this...?

A halo is caused by moisture in the air.

The half circles are called "tangent arcs", and I had not heard of them (or seen a picture) before I read your question, so thanks!

There are also things called moon dogs and sun dogs. These are bright spots to the side(s) of the moon or sun. They're called "dogs" because they travel with the moon, like faithful companions.
