Lately, I think that it is either my imagination or a fact that I am less comfortable than ever before in my life in hot weather.

1) Is this phenomenon real in that increasing age causes less tolerance, emotionally and physically, to high temperatures? (I don't get "hot flashes.")

2) Is it just plain true that the weather sucks so that I am not alone?

Its #1... The older you get , the less tolerant one get to the weather extremes...
If I am in weather that is below 50 degrees, I really suffer... Same holds true for the high 90's, expecially with high humidity...
As a kid visiting my grandparents in Laredo, Texas, 100 plus heat didn't bother me a bit...

Growing old is not for Sissys !!!!!

I don't think I'll ever be intolerant to hot weather. The hotter, the better I like it. Today we hit the 3-digits...100 degrees. I luv it.

I like hot weather too. Unfortunately, it's usually not hot enough here for me. Thank goodness for low humidity, though, or I wouldn't be able to stand it. Last Thursday was just the way I like it.....nice and toasty at 107 degrees and 15% humidity. It's the cold I can't stand. A couple of winters ago it hit 30 below---absolute torture.

Give me cold weather any day! We reached our summer high yesterday, 96, but over 100 with the heat index. And it is a very humid heat. Yup, let me stay inside and crank up the A/C Big Grin

I would be very happy to see a Heat Index just over 100°. It has ranged from 105° to 118° here for quite a while, and DG can't afford AC. Right now, at 10:30 am, it is 91°F with a Heat Index of 99°.
As far as Vegas hitting 110° - 115°, I can tell you that I have been in Vegas in 110°+ heat, and it is like St. Louis in the 90s°.

Years ago, I played softball, a night game, in 95° with 92% humidity. No matter how often you dried off the ball, it got wet just travelling through the air. That was my last season.

How is it possible you all like the heat? What is the least bit appealing about walking outside and feeling as if you have just walked into a steam room? You can't breath. You sweat like a pig just standing still. Your clothes get sopping wet just sitting outside....ya'll are nuts!!! Big Grin

I laid out by the pool for 4 hours yesterday and when I came inside my swimsuit was totally wet...and I didn't even go into the pool - lol.

As everyone except Fritzzs has given their opinion of hot weather rather than answer your question, Roll Eyes here’s my opinion.

Heat intolerance can be caused by drugs, obesity or be a symptom of a number of illnesses. Whilst cold intolerance due to reduced mobility is well known in older people, I've not heard much said about heat intolerance.

My personal view is that whether you like it or loathe it, hot weather does drain your energy. As we also tend to feel less energetic as we get older then heat will exacerbate this.

If we are already frustrated by the diminishing of our energy due to age, then we are very likely to be emotionally affected during hot weather when our energy is even further reduced. That’s in addition to the fact that people of all ages are much more prone to a ‘shorter fuse’ during heat waves.

I agree with Fritzzs. Eek Smile Increasing age causes less tolerance, emotionally and physically, to high and low temperatures. Just listening to my mother complaining long and loud when she is either a little warm or just slightly chilly has proved it for me!

But why is a sprightly young thing like you asking this question tsaeb? Big Grin

First, I did not want to say that I am remaining vigilant as to whether we are going to be fried for how long and how badly by global warming.

Second, I am experiencing one of those famous but horrendous New York summers, which I predicted by the way.

Third, after years since I had migraine headaches, I have had three of them this year from too much pollen. Otherwise, I used to feel like honiluv: I would take heat over cold any day. Anyway, I conclude that the weather--and not me--is wacky. I am, instead, . . . eh, cranky.

Here it's entirely possible, mainly because

A) hot weather doesn't come that often and it's enjoyable when it does and

B) the summertime humidity here is so low. We're wimps when it comes to the humidity here. Big Grin
In the hot days of summer, it is almost never above 30% humidity, and when it does get that high, we all gripe. Even in the hottest days (here our 107 last week is as hot as it gets, and maybe once a summer) the breeze is always blowing and is actually quite comfortable once you find a good shady spot.

Hi, I joined this site b/c I am not perimenopausal OR Hyperthyroid, rather am hypothyroid but stabilized on meds---and cannot understand why I have zero heat tolerance! 42 y.o. and for last couple of years felt literally sick when exposed to high heat. My body temp rises accordingly. Today in 88 degrees, my temp reached 99.7. Go figure. Wonder if anyone else "overreacts" to the heat? Neurologist mentioned seratonin imbalance causing this, prescribed 5 HTP capsules, magnesium w/malic acid and "organic" lithium (like: homeopathic, barely-there doses of all)... Feedback appreciated; hate being hermetic due to heat.

As I am relating to this last post...i.e...no menopause goin on, hypothyrodic(I take synthroid daily),...lol, and can't stand the heat either. I have found myself checking websites for information on menopause and found out...NOPE...not yet, anyway, I think the weather is just miserable right now. The heat is on(so to speak). Look at what happened with the President cancelling his trip due to the heat and the Boy Scouts in Virginia that had heat stroke. I think we have just been having really hot weather.

Gotta get my two cents' worth in.. Roll Eyes Wink
Has anyone considered weight?
When I was morbidly obese, I couldn't tolerate hot weather at all! Bad, since I live on the Great Gulf Coast, USA! Hot AND humid!
I've lost a great deal of weight, and I've found that the hot weather doesn't bother me nearly so badly now. In fact, I have a hard time being in a draft. (Cold weather is OK - I expect to wear warm clothing then! Big Grin)
BTW I'm 53, menopausal (hot flashes last only a minute or so), and not taking any hormones.
