My doctor just put me on these to help with my fibroid problems he says as a temporary measure until surgery. Has anyone tried this before for avoiding surgery?

I have never heard of birth control pills being prescribed as a temporary measure before surgery, but I am sure your doctor has valid reasons. Perhaps you should ask him. I do not know exactly what your "fibroid problems" are but no doubt your doctor believes that the beneficial side effects of the pills can help you while you await surgery.

Doctors tend to prescribe birth control pills as a way to control the bleeding that can be worsened by fibroids, endometriosis, adenomyosis, etc. They like to avoid surgery at all costs - especially when they are afraid a hysterectomy might be warranted. More than likely they will keep prescribing different dosages of birth control pills until they are satisfied with the control. If that doesn't work for you they might try a D & C or an endometrial ablation before laproscopic surgery or a hysterectomy. I went through all of this myself so if you have concerns or questions, please feel free to e-mail me. I'll be glad to share more with you.

My doctor also prescribed birth control pills to me to help regulate my period and try to control the constant bleeding problem I was having. She then performed a D&C on me, and it was very beneficial, but only for a few months.
I have now come to the decision to have a hysterectomy. I will keep my ovaries so that I'm not forced into immediate menopause. The fibroids simply grow too quickly, cause unexpected bleeding, put pressure on a nerve in my back, and cause me to be anemic.
My condition is probably much worse than yours. Hopefully, the birth control pills will help stabilize your hormones and regulate your periods so that you won't be facing break-through bleeding on a regular basis.
Good luck to you.
