I have been a wine lover for many, many years, but it seems to give me a headache more and more often. I'm not buying the extra cheap brands (much) anymore. Anyway, any suggestions for an extra smooth wine, not to go with a specific meal, just for a treat once in a while?? Red or white or anything in between - I love it all! Thanks!! *********************************************************** 06-30-02, 09:17 AM gizmogram Hi skrip - It's probably the sulphites in the wine giving you a headache.
"I get headaches, stuffy nose, and rosy cheeks from red wine. Is this an allergic reaction?"
Technically, this is not an allergic reaction. What is being described is usually referred to the "red wine headache syndrome." This is not related to sulfite content of the wine but probably due to other substances contained within the wine such as histamines, tyramine, and phenolic flavonoids. Aside from the discomfort of the headache, these symptoms do not appear to be a risk for progression to a more serious reaction. Studies have suggested that these headaches can be avoided or minimized by taking either aspirin, ibuprofen, or acetaminophen prior to drinking wine.
And me again - funny, although they cite red wine as being worse, white seems to be worse for me and merlot doesn't seem to bother me. However, I generally don't drink strictly wine anymore, maybe a glass or two w/dinner out. Beer's my bag.
A personal caution to the above quote from winenet, physicians cauthion against taking ibuprophen or acetiminophen with alcohol on a regular basis.
06-30-02, 09:43 AM trixkala Alcohol may also cause damage to the liver when it is taken with acetaminophen.
The interaction of any drug (especially Over The Counter types) and alcohol should be avoided.
06-30-02, 10:29 AM gizmogram Thank you for the stronger warning - I went out to find a medical link with more info & by the time I got back I was too late to edit but there was your liver warning.
06-30-02, 10:51 AM gizmogram And here's a very informative web-site:
06-30-02, 06:21 PM skrip So now I've got the sulfites against me!?! (hehe) Maybe I'll give the merlot a try - I'm not a big wine drinker either, I just like a glass now and then. The drug interaction warning is much appreciated. I thought acetaminophen was the one to avoid - is it ibuprofin also? Any favorite brand of merlot? Thanks again everybody!!! cool
06-30-02, 07:07 PM gizmogram So far, I haven't found a Merlot that I didn't like, but it is quite a robust wine.
I'm not a wine expert, so I'm sure that there are alot of really good ones out there. Hopefully you'll get more answers here.
A good friend that IS a wine expert still asks for waiter's recommendations when dining in a fine restaurant. She likes to experiment!
07-01-02, 04:13 AM coldfuse A couple of red wines I have tried and enjoyed over the past year that are relatively inexpensive are:
Rancho Zabaco Red Zinfandel Fat Bastard (that's really the name)
Happy Birthday, Skrip! (1 July)
07-01-02, 06:47 PM skrip I'm going to try my luck with the Merlot - I'll post my new favorite when I figure it out! Thanks for the ideas also - I can't imagine going to the liquor store and asking for a "Fat Bastard"!lol! Oh - and thank you SO much for the birthday wish! I'm 36 and I'm havin' a good one! big grin
07-01-02, 09:24 PM gizmogram Skrip, I was going to post a Happy Birthday to you out in the Discussion Board this morning, but so many already had!
I figure you'll be checking this thread even if it's not on your pops, so I thought I'd do it here!
Happy, Happy! Even if you don't see this until tomorrow, I hope you had a great celebration!
My hubby & I both share July birthdays, along with his best life-long friend....they always celebrated together, so when I came along I got to join in! (the three of us are 10 days apart). Usually, the birthday celebration is at a local bar & half the town comes (we live in a town of about 900)
This year, Mike & I decided we'd like to do this at our place since we have a big deck and a huge yard - lots more space than is available at the bar, you know? So come 7/20 we're going to have 100+ coming and going from about noon on. I'm sure it's going to be great fun! By the way, he & his friend will be 53 & I'll be 45 this month. Darned good reason for a celebration if I ever heard one!
Again, Skrip, Happy Birthday!
07-07-02, 09:52 AM trixkala If you are fond of red wine, the full body and aroma, but hate the tannic acid and sulfides that react with your body.
I suggest you try a bottle of white merlot. I am not a wine expert, I do admit, but I know what tastes good to me. The white merlot has a color very much like white zinfandel but is not so cloyingly sweet. Try some, and let me know what you think.
07-28-02, 04:30 PM cattywampus I like a Chateau St. Michele merlot mixed with a good Cabernet. Somebody else must, too, because now they're making some that way. I also love "Gevertztraminer" (sp?) for its light, fruity flavor. Catty razz
