My great nephew will be baptised in about six weeks time and, although I cannot afford to spend very much on a gift I would like to buy something that will be appreciated when he is older. In my experience bibles and prayer books are not always welcomed by boys, even those who are Christians. They prefer their own translation. Any ideas most gratefully received. Many thanks.

My brother and I were both given a child-size silver knife, fork and spoon set for our christenings. We were very fond of these - and have passed them down the family line. A less expensive, but more personal, idea would be a photo album containing pictures to do with his family's history.
One of the most cherished gifts can be a gold chain with a small religious charm. If money is a consideration, just the charm. A cross, a metal bearing the likeness of his/her patron Saint, etc.
In Greece these metals are pinned to the back of baby's clothes where they can be seen but will not inflict harm. As the child grows older, he will take pride in removing that "something special" to be worn to Sunday services or on Holidays only.
This is a wonderful keepsake of the occassion, and is worn into adulthood.

I was going to say the same thing trixkala said those make a wonderful keepsake. Also, most Christian bookstores will carry plaques with the childs name and meaning as well as characteristics. If it is an unusual name they will special order it. It is a gift that is mostly appreciated when they are older.
yup - just a box..... you can find little silver boxes and have his initials engraved on the cover. I got these for my friends little girls and they can use them as they get older on their bureau for rings, necklaces, etc. A boy could still use these for various trinkets he may collect along the way and when he gets married, what could be a more perfect thing to present a ring to his bride-to-be (or whatever he may choose to do with it).....
