If you were looking for "pre-broadcast era debates", then it was "Lincoln-Douglas" 1858.

The Lincoln Douglas debates of 1858 were for a Senate seat from Illinois. The seventh debate was held about 15-20 miles from my house. (No, SR, I was not in residence at the time.) The Presidential election was held in 1860. There was no debate then.

I looked back at the source that I had provided in 2003 and the answer was right there. 1960 JFK vs Nixon debate.
