A law passed by the 84th Congress (P.L. 84-140) and approved by the President (Eisenhower) on July 30, 1956, the President approved a Joint Resolution of the 84th Congress, declaring IN GOD WE TRUST the national motto of the United States. IN GOD WE TRUST was first used on paper money in 1957, when it appeared on the one-dollar silver certificate.
However, several people were indirectly responsible for the motto's creation and earlier use on coins. See:
Aw, Racer, there you are again at 93% completion (actually, not bad for a Giants fan). The person responsible for the wording was Charles E. Bennett (D-Fla) who introduced the bill into Congress. He died 9/6/03 at age 92; obit is in today's New York times.
