Hi Mozart,
Haiti became the first independent black republic on the 1st of January 1804.

Jean Jacques Dessalines was the first leader of the independent Haiti, and was crowned Emperor on the 8th October 1804. He took the title Jaques the First.

Haitain Bicentennial Site

Thanks for an interesting question. While I was looking at the site on Haiti, I came across a picture of La Citadelle. What an incredible structure:

La Citadelle Laferriere

La Citadelle is considered one of the eight wonders of the world. Built by Henri Christophe, it is the largest fortress in the Carribean. It was built to defend the northern part of the island from European invasion. This mammoth structure has walls measuring 46 feet thick and is large enough to hold 10,000 people; it was constructed over the course of 15 years.
