Mozart, I have long heard that, but have never found a source outside of a Trivia book or site.
(I even read a bio of Einstein, but it was not mentioned.) Do you have one ?

Yes here it is Dorian!

Did You Know Einstein could not find a job in physics upon graduating from college, and became a technical assistant in the Swiss Patent Office. He worked on theoretical physics in his spare time.
Einstein did not receive a Nobel Prize for his theory of relativity.
Einstein immediately left Germany for the United States following Hitler's rise to power.
Einstein spent much of his later career searching for a unified field theory, but was unsuccessful.
Einstein declined the presidency of the state of Israel when it was offered to him in 1952 by state leaders.
The element einsteinium, discovered in 1952, was named in honor of Albert Einstein.

Just a quick note. Although it's true that Einstein didn't receive the Nobel Prize for relativity, encarta's little blurb makes it sound like some great injustice was done. In fact, Einstein recieved a Nobel Prize for explaning the photoelectric effect (which he did before coming up with relativity) and the Nobel committe doesn't give the same person the prize twice.

About the actual question though. Israel is a democracy, and as such the presidency cannot just be offered. It is true, however, that the Israeli ambassador to the US, Abba Eban, Asked Einstein to run for president in 1952, and that Einstein declined the offer.

The bottom line on this one is that Einstein really wasn't offered the presidency; he was offered a chance to run for the presidency. - DG
