Congress had specified, way back in 1818, that new states could only be added to the Union on what day of the year?

I'm having a little problem with this.

Maine became the 23rd state to enter the union on March 15, 1820.

Iowa became the 29th state to enter the union on December 28, 1846.

Oregon joined the union as the 33rd state on February 14, 1859.

I don't see any consistency.

Now in 1818 it was decided that the US flag would add stars for each state only once a year and the date chosen was July 4.

Out of curiosity, what date did the newspaper have?

July 4th I copied this page this morning and sent it to them along with a copy of the article written. You know, we didn't take their paper for over 15 years because their reporting was so terrilbe. We heard that it was taken over by another company because they were going broke. It's the only paper in a town of over 200,000 people and they were going broke. We thought they would be doing better. Guess I will give them another chance after this then go back to just listening to the news.

Well, reporters are only as good as their sources. And it's quite possible the source was correct but something got lost in the translation.

July 4, 1818: With the adoption of this flag by a law passed April 4, 1818, the flag begins to assume its later appearance. Some favor adding a stripe for each new state, but Congress restores the 13 stripes and orders the addition of one star for each new state, to take effect the 4th day of July succeeding the admission of the state.
