There have been 43 US Presidential elections in which the office has changed hands, counting Washington's first term. How many times has a sitting President been defeated for re-election? Who were they?

I came up with ten occasions when this happened:
1) Jefferson over John Adams--1800
2) Jackson over sonny boy J. Q. Adams---1828
3) W.H. Harrison over Van Buren--1840
4) Benjamin Harrison over Grover Cleveland--1888
5) and Cleveland returning the favor over Harrison--1892
6) Wilson over Taft---1912
7) Roosevelt over Hoover(a gimme if there ever was one)---1932
8) Jimmy Carter over Gerald Ford (1976)
9) Ronald Reagan over Carter (1980)
10) Clinton over George Bush Sr. (1992)

and, Dorian, I know you're hoping for
11) John Kerry over George W. Bush (2004) Big Grin

Actuall, I am hoping for a 10th; one of yours is wrong. Can you, or someone else, spot it?

Are you refering to Thomas Jeferson,(1800), elected by the House of Representatives because of a tie in the electoral college?

Or was it Wilson over FDR in 1912?

Oops. I think Ford actually doesn't belong; he was the sitting President when defeated by Jimmy Carter; however, he was never elected as President, first being appointed as Vice-President under Richard Nixon following the resignation of Spiro Agnew, and then becoming President following Nixon's resignation 10 months later.

Clear your cards, we have a winner! Ford could not have been re-elected since he was never elected. Good job, Jelp

I'm not among them, but the more cynical would make the same argument about George W. Bush. Big Grin
