Don't know an exact date but it was in Sept 1836.

On September 9, 1836, future president Abraham Lincoln received a license to practice law from the Illinois Supreme Court. Setting up office in Springfield, he filed his first lawsuit less than a month later, on October 5. I think his girl friend died that year too. I remember reading somewhere he lost a sweetheart around the time he got his license...
