Hey guys,

The girls at work booked a bus trip to NYC, and we are going the saturday after thanksgiving.

Hubby and I are taking the kids. Its not a guided bus trip, its one where they drive you, drop you off and pick you up.

I have a few 'must see' thoughts on what to do, but its been YEARS since I have been to New York (since high school) so I am looking for suggestions on what we could rationally expect to see in one day, walking.

High on my priority list is Ground Zero, the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island. I think those would be interesting to both the 12 year old and 8 year old.

But since we are walking...in November...

What would you suggest?

Some possibilities:

Go to Times Square

Walk up Fifth Ave. (lots of shops)

Go to Central Park

Check out Macy's

China Town and Little Italy

When I went to NY in January, my 10 year old stepdaughter came, too. We were only there for a short period of time (in transit to the actual place we were going), but she loved it! She even made herself a little NY photo album.

I have to say, I had to go again last summer for work, and it was so much nicer in the winter - cold, but much less crowded and much prettier. Plus, I think travelling with kids who think everything is cool is much more fun than travelling with adults who complain about everything! Smile

Here are some things she really enjoyed (not in any particular order):

1- riding on the subway
2- the Metropolitan Museum of Art (which surprised me - I thought she'd be bored silly. Granted, we only stayed about an hour, but they had a really neat fashion exhibit about clothes made out of or inspired by animal furs that caught her attention)
3- Central Park. She LOVED central park. We took a million photos. It's really pretty in the winter.
4- We went ice-skating near Rockefeller Plaza. I don't know if it's open in November, but if it is, you should go. It's a bit expensive but really fun. It was my stepdaughter's first time iceskating, but we had a blast! Now, everytime we see a movie and someone goes iceskating at Rockefeller Plaza (which happens more than you'd think in movies, for some reason), my stepdaughter grins and says, "I was there!"
5- Times Square at night! It's incredible! All the lights really take your breath away. For kids, that in itself is neat, plus there are a lot of shops. The Toys R Us there is huge and has some funny gimmicks inside other than just toys to buy (for example, a Statue of Liberty made out of legos).

Sorry I never got back to you to thank you for your suggestions.

We ended up having a blast. We started out at the Toys R Us at Times Square (a 3 story toy store, what kid wouldn't love that?)

We walked to central park to find the "Balto" statue (The dog that lead the dog sled team in Alaska to carry medicine to save a town in need). My son was studying this story, and earned extra credit for finding the statue and bringing in a picture.

We walked through Times Square, and had lunch at Mars 2112 A fun place to eat

We also took the subway to try to get down to Ground Zero and the statue of liberty, but there was construction on that train line, so we ended up in Brooklyn instead.

We got to see Rockefeller plaza, the Plaza Hotel, and several big buildings that the kids were fascinated by.

We ended the day by having 'real' NYC pizza in a little place just a block away from Times Square. Karena was thrilled. All she wanted was an I love NY teeshirt, and nyc pizza.

Matts favorite part was getting lost on the subway

Well, we are headed back...

My daughters 13th birthday is this weekend, so she and I are headed into the city for the day.

We were going to try to get tickets to see Wicked but they are sold out.

Ringling Brothers is in town now, so I was thinking about taking her to that in Madison Square Gardens.

Is it worth the time and money?
