On the one hand, I admire your sense of organisation Jenny, to know what you are doing that far in advance. On the other, I wonder if you do anything spontaneous, when it comes to traveling. Even my trips to the UK are rarely planned more than a couple of months in advance. When I am in the UK, I see the travel agents' windows are full of last minute deals to Europe, and I have to say I have been tempted to buy one of these. Has anyone had any success with these cheap, last minute trips? The only thing that gets planned here more than a couple of months in advance, is the trip to the cottage. This is at Sauble Beach on Lake Huron in Ontario. It's about 3 hours north of here. Sauble BeachBy far my favourite place in this province is Pelee Island, Ontario If I'm not mistaken, it is the most southerly inhabited part of Canada. Map

We locals (in Britain)have a different approach, by and large. We hit the website of easyJet or Ryanair and pick a flight. These airlines work on the principle of the price being dictated by the state of the bookings on the flight: the price goes up as the plane fills up. So you'll find a big variation in fares between flights on different days in the week and also the same day to the same place.Anyway, they can be very cheap indeed, even at the last minute. You can normally book as late as two hours before the flight: then you just have the problem of getting to the airport in time to check in The fun thing to do is to pick a place you've never heard of: it could be anywhere and you may not be able to guess which country it is in! They often have destinations which have hitherto not been touristy but which are nonetheles well worth seeing. That's because the local airport can be had cheaply by the airline and the local government is keen to have the business. A result has been that some areas which nobody visited are now popular destinations. As to accommodation, you should be able to book online through one of the big agents or though the local tourist office. We do use last minute deals too. Websites like lastminute.com offer packages like that. They are fine for city visits in particular because they can get good discounts on the top hotels.I have, occasionally, used them for this and they've been fine. Mostly though they offer deals for holiday resorts in such places as Majorca and Greece. I've used agents on last minute deals but for much further away than Europe's mainland. They are great for last minute trips to Egypt, Kenya and the like. The typical high street travel agent has suffered a lot from the internet and airlines like Ryanair. All ABTA (the trade association ) agents can be trusted to provide a reasonable service and their packages are good value.

It's the way I am. We book the next years holidays the minute we come back from the previous one. That way we have something to look forward to and can pay off the balance at our leisure. Also, because of the different jobs we all do, we cannot just 'go' at a couple of weeks notice.

Leppi, I just love to travel. I have visited lots of European countries, Greece ( and the Greek Islands), Spain, Cyprus, Italy, France, Belgium, Austria, Switzerland, Holland, Portugal Have also been to Tunisia, Cairo and the pyramids, cruised down the Nile to Aswan and visited Valley of the Kings at Luxor. In the Usa have been to New York, Washington, Niagara Falls, Philadelphia, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Yosemite, Las Vegas, Grand Canyon, Phoenix, Sedona. This year, in September, we are going to Memphis and Nashville. It's all I work for. All my wages go on our fantastic holidays( and Ritz's extortionate music lesson fees of course!) Animator, Chicago is on the agenda for 2009 when we travel across the USA by train coast to coast!
