I am planning a trip to costa rica in oct/nov. Can anybody give me suggestions on where to stay and what to avoid?

I think you should avoid the adventure tourist companies. Many of them offer white-water rafting and deap sea diving. Several American citizens drown in Costa Rica each year. I would skip the water rides just to be safe.
