So, planning a trip to the Carolina's in a few months, but all the stuff we're reading seems to be setting us up for touristy spots, which we'd prefer to avoid. Any of you know of some less-traveled beautiful spots in the Carolina's we need to hit? Or just some of your fave spots/nightlife, etc., anything really. Thanks for any help !!!!

Hendersonville, NC

http://www.historichendersonville.org/ [see attractions]

Was last there almost 50 years ago. Glorious by car from Phila.

Sceni views. Mountains. Historic. B&B. Country breakfasts with home cured bacon, ham, apple dumplings....in a rock cottage home lush with green grass and flowers everywhere. Horsebackriding. Now . ???

Outer Banks 10 yrs ago

http://www.insiders.com/outerbanks/ The Atlantic is spectacular swimming w peaceful white sand beaches. Sort of rednecky but nice country folk. There was a bad hurricane a few years ago. You must check before going so you don't go to a disater area!

Charleston -elegant southern belle. Old fashioned charm and beauty by the ocean made possible by slavery, plantations, inhumanity. Gentility at the expense of other human beings'deprivations.

The Carolinas are a beautiful place to enjoy your vacation. Smile

I would suggest Topsail Island. There are very good campgrounds, and beaches there. A great place to relax. Cool

In Jacksonville, North Carolina is the Beirut Memorial. (The Other Wall) It is a beautiful place.

"It does not stand in Washington
By others of its kind
In prominence and dignity
With mission clear defined.
It does not list the men who died
That tyranny should cease
But speaks in silent eloquence
Of those who came in peace.
This Other Wall is solemn white
And cut in simple lines
And it nestles in the splendor
Of the Carolina pines.
And on this wall there are the names
Of men who once had gone
In friendship's name to offer aid
To Beirut, Lebanon.
They did not go as conquerors
To bring a nation down
Or for honor or for glory
Or for praises or renown
When they landed on that foreign shore
Their only thought in mind
Was the safety of its people
And the good of all mankind.
Though they offered only friendship
And freedom's holy breath
They were met with scorn and mockery
And violence and death.
So the story of their glory
Is not of battles fought
But of their love for freedom
Which was so dearly bought.
And their Wall shall stand forever
So long as freedom shines
On the splendor and the glory
Of the Carolina pines."
