At my place of employment, we have our own server that runs our network of computers.

A few months ago, we experienced a variety of problems.... not being able to print to certain printers, etc etc etc. Then before Christmas, we were unable to do our daily backups!!!! (I became aware of the backup problem only yesterday!)

We were told by our tech people that our server is FULL and must be replaced. Well, working for an establishment which needs to jump thru soooo many hoops, before a decision is made, we are still unable to preform backups! The tech people are waiting for our decision STILL!

I know that if we have a major problem, and have to restore from our last backup, which is BEFORE Christmas, everything will have to be re-done... and that goes for accounts payable, accounts receivabe, payroll, etc etc etc. EVERYTHING!

Since I just found out - I want to impress upon my boss how critical it is that we solve this immediately!!!

I'm not in the position to make these decisions, and the ones that are.. don't seem to understand the severity of the problem!

Can anyone help in spurring a decision here???

GEEZE!!

If an additional larger hard disk is installed, you should be able to copy the entire present hard disk to it. You should then be able to boot from the new disk, and make your usual backup (this assumes the backups could not be performed due to lack of disk space).

I generally recommend backing up to a hard disk, rather than tape or CD-R, due to the larger capacity, lower cost per MB of storage, and fast, unattended operation.

Our backups are made onto tapes. We have been unable to do so for some time.

I'm not sure what you mean by "an additional larger hard disk".

Remember.... I'm an "excellent driver".

-- an additional larger hard disk --

Install another hard disk, larger than the existing one, in the server. Copy the complete contents of the old drive onto the new one. The sysadmin should have absolutely no problem doing this.
