My clients Windows 98 2nd Edition computer running Internet Explorer version 6.0 SP1 will not display the "It is now safe to turn off your computer" (logos.sys) image during a normal shut down. It does display the image correctly in Safe Mode.

This computer has a new 30 GB hard drive and 256 MB RAM. Windows 98 2nd Edition was installed over Windows 95 and the problem began shortly after the installation (though not immediately).

In Normal Mode, the "Microsoft Windows 98 - Windows is shutting down" (logow.sys file) image displays and I can hear the hard drive shut down. Pressing the power off switch shuts off the computer, and the Scandisk does not run when the computer is restarted.

The Bootlog.txt file shows "EndTerminate=Kernel" as the last line, so I think the machine is actually shutting down correctly, except that the "It is now safe to turn off your computer" display does not appear.

I have downloaded and installed the Windows 98 2nd Edition shutdown supplement with no change. I uninstalled the supplement and manually shut off the fast shutdown in msconfig/advanced with no effect. I then ran the Windows 98 2nd Edition troubleshooter, again with no effect.

Using System File Checker (SFC), I extracted and installed new "logow.sys" and "logos.sys" files to C:\Windows with no effect.

There was an update at http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com to allow an extra 2 seconds for shutdown to allow the write cache more time at shutdown and I installed that, with no effect.

In msconfig, I ran the "Selective Startup" with everything un-checked. The "It is now safe to turn off your computer" display still did not appear.

Any ideas what may be causing this problem? I have spent several hours trying to solve this and am out of ideas.

Thanks,
Dwight

Hi Dwight:
I've seen this a few times on my WIN'95 machine. Most times
it happens after a session where I've had a TON of applications
running & numerious windows opened. I kind of figured,
I'ed "GAGGed" Windows. roll eyes

Pressing the "power off" switch for final shutdown, in
these instances also didn't run SCANDISK on restart, so I
guess windows was shut down OK. confused

Here's a link to a site with a bunch of things you can try.

Best of luck to you

Mike b. (AKA Byter)

BTW, Check out the fourth step, That guy has links on his page
that open Directories on your own machine ! How Kool is that ???
That's one of those "I didn't know you could do that" thingies.

Watch out for the devil's workshop sometime in the future LOL
