I have an H.P.Pavillion A630N Computer with Win XP & 512-MB of RAM.

I am trying to download ACAD Version 11. I get an error message that says:

Phar Lap Error 35. The 386 chip is currently executing in virtual 8086 mode under the control of another program. You must turn off this other program in order to use 386Big GrinOS-Extender to run in protected mode.

What program is this? Does any one know how I can turn off this other program?

As I recall from a previous question about ACAD, you had a version running in Windows 98 that will not run on your new WinXP system.

I'm assuming that this version 11 is a product version update to that original product. Is that correct?

Do the specifications for this version 11 specify Windows XP SP2?

Have you considered downloading and running their 30-day trial program update: AutoCAD Trial Download

Did you contact their product support technical people? Autodesk Technical Support

I hope something here will help!

Yes. You have a good memory.

No.

The Version 11 is about twelve years old. Win XP & SP2 were not around then. However , I do have SP2 with my Win XP.

Have you considered downloading and running their 30-day trial program update:

They want $47.00 to run this Trial program of their 2007 Version of ACAD.

Did you contact their product support technical people?

No, not yet.

I don't think release 11 works on Windows XP (it definitely won't work well). Release 11 came out in October of 1990...16 years ago. You simply will continue to have problems unless you run it through Win95 or Win98. I've looked at some sites that discuss this and the overwhelming majority of people say you need to upgrade your AutoCAD or buy an old computer to use and operate it within the operating system it was designed to run on. Old computers can be found for about nothing I believe but they come with a unique set of problems as well.

From my experience Release 11 is a dinosaur now and you would benefit greatly both in ease of operation and in being able to work quickly if you bought AutoCAD LT. It is a much more windows friendly program now and the new commands and features are well worth it if you plan to use it often.

Otherwise, perhaps Dwight can explain to you how to run a virtual Win95 to run it on your machine. You can set up your machine to run Win95 but I have no clue how to go about that.

I no longer use ACAD on a daily basis but I've been with the program since release 2.6 in 1986. I think you are using the last of the DOS versions with Release 11 and it is a more difficult and less accessible program than the new versions out there.

Just a side note about your error messages, to run release 11 you have to have a math coprocessor. I don't know enough about computers to know if new machines come with this automatically but your Release 11 will be looking for it.

"Look into Virtual PC or VMware. The only way I've found so far is to
setup a Virtual '98 machine on a XP box. It's the 98 drivers ( or lack
of ) that keep me from installing '98 straight onto a new machine. And
without '98, your out of luck. XP can't / won't / doesn't like a lot of
the extended DOS calls that Pharlap took care of. -David "

animator:

Thanks for the input.

I already have ACAD Version 11 on my IBM Computer with Win 98 2nd Edition. It works well on this computer. I was trying to get it to work also on my H.P. Computer with Win XP because I have a color printer connected to that computer that I don't have with the IBM computer. The IBM computer only has a black & white printer connected to it.

I am now looking into ways to build a network by connecting my two computers together so that I can use either of my printers with either of my computers.
