sherasi, As I am not an expert, all I can give you is my opinion, but I believe refurbished pc's should be just as good as any, especially if they were refurbished by the manufacturer. Was there any certain site you were considering buying from?

Prices on www.overstock.com for laptops is no great savings!! $599.99 - Save $1700.00 - HAH!!! http://www.overstock.com/cgi-bin/d2.cgi?PAGE=PROFRAME&PROD_ID=544064 What a joke, this is for a 3 year old laptop which MAY have sold for a total of $1500 when new. You can buy a new, fully loaded P4 lap top for around $800 (Check out www.dell.com for instance). I would be very careful about purchasing computer from that site.
