I'm running an HP Pavilion, Win.98SE, Outlook Express 6.
Windows Update is up to date.
Everything in this mail program worked until this afternoon. Now, everything BUT my Sent Items folder.
I clicked it on to delete todays messages and got the following window:
An error has occured in the script on this page.
Line:33
Char:1
Error: Object expected
Code:0
URL: mhtml:mid//00000002/

Beneath this it asks, "Do you want to continue running scrips on this page?" then a yes or no box.
Clicking yes or no or close does not close this window, in fact I cannot close anything. The system totally freezes. I've also tried Esc., Ctrl. Esc., delete, ctrl delete, crtl/alt/delete.....nothing. I must turn off the system at the main power switch to shut down.
After trying a couple of times and immediately getting the above window after clicking open the sent items folder I restarted the computer and ran Spybot, cleared my Temp. files, ran a complete (always updated) virus scan, a thorough Scan Disk + automatic fix for errors and a defrag. Everything is clean, no errors found, etc.
I opened OE again and sent items folder does the same thing.
I've checked out tools/accts/properties/etc. all is fine.
Also tools/options and all the categories, all those too are fine.

HELP! What the heck can I do now? I've no way to get rid of this mail...

Thanks any help will be much appreciated.
P.S. I'll be available to check in tomorrow afternoon......

Try the following steps in this order, checking after each to see if the problem is resolved.

Double-click My Computer, Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs, and Microsoft Internet Explorer, then choose the Repair option and click OK. Restart the computer, (re)install the latest IE6 and OE6 updates from Windows Update, and restart the computer.

Double-click My Computer, Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs, Microsoft Outlook Express, and click Yes to uninstall the program. When done, double-click Microsoft Internet Explorer and choose Add a Component. Select Outlook Express and click Next to reinstall the program. Reinstall the lastest OE6 update from Windows Update.

First, thank you for including your system information as well as a detailed background with your question. That is so helpful!

If TomGL2's suggestions do not fix the problem, here is a link to an excellent resource for Outlook Express: Tom Koch's site, Tomsterdam (Microsoft MVP for Outlook Express)

Another thing you might try is locating and deleting the "folders.dbx" file.

(1) Close Outlook Express.
(2) Find the folders.dbx file, and delete it.
You may need to search in the system files for this file
(3) Open Outlook Express.

Outlook Express will automatically rebuild the folders.dbx file.

Hopefully, TomGL2's suggestion has already solved the problem. But if not, I hope this will be helpful!

Yours,
Dwight

Tom and Dwight-
Thank you both for your replies.
One question before I begin, I see the add/remove properties window does not show a "Repair" option. Will this open once I've clicked remove? Just want to be on the safe side here.

Double-click Microsoft Internet Explorer 6... in Add/Remove Programs. A menu with the Repair option will appear.

Hi Tom-
Neither method resolved the problem and Windows Update had nothing to reinstall to either program.
I'm about to try Dwight's suggestion regarding the .dbx file.

Dwight I looked at tom Koch's site and could find nothing in regard to script errors in any folder or file.

Should either of you have any more ideas for me, boy are they ever welcome!

Thanks Guys

OK- I THINK I've found the correct file folder. It is called Outlook Express /File Folder and has the following in it, all with 'flag' icons:

A.dbx
Cleanup Log
Deleted Items.dbx
Drafts.dbx
Folders.dbx
Inbox.dbx
Offline.dbx
Outbox.dbx
Pop3vidl.dbx
Sent Items.dbx

Now, let me clarify--- Do I delete the entire folder or a specific item, i.e. 'Sent Items'?

Whew, you both have the patience of saints!

The file that you delete is named:
folders.dbx
You can delete it directly from the "Search" results window, if Outlook Express is not open.

Looks like I'm back in business, (Unless I managed to mess something else up).

I closed Outlook Express.

I clicked find/files & folders, then typed in folders.dbx in 'c' highlighted it and deleted it three times, after which I'd open OE, click sent items only to find each time that I was back at square one.

Went back to find/files & folders and typed in Sent Items folders.dbx.
I went thru and individually deleted everything listed there, reopened OE and problem seems to be solved as well as the fact the sent items list is now empty.

Thank you so much for all your help. I'd NEVER have tried playing around with these files without your suggestions and help.

Keeping my fingers crossed that I didn't delete something that I shouldn't have!

Happy Di !!!!!!!!!!!!
(I know, I know, some don't like all these exclamination marks but Heaven's I'm ecstatic!

That is very interesting. Perhaps the sent items.dbx file was corrupted, or one of the messages in the folder was bad.

I don't think I would have thought of trying that, but I'm glad to learn that it worked!
