Hewlett-Packard Pavilion 8190 computer running Windows 98. The mouse is a USB connected HP model U8131 which uses a roller ball. The software in the Device Manager identifies it as a "Genius USB Wheel Mouse", with a secondary entry as a "HID-compliant mouse".
Recently, when I have had my computer running for two or more hours, my mouse begins to get increasingly erratic. I have cleaned it, so I know it's not caused by junk on the rollers, though that is what it acts like.
When I restart the computer, the mouse is fine again until about two hours goes by, then it starts getting erratic. This is the same whether the computer is working or just idling.
I have removed, then reinstalled the mouse driver, with no change in performance. I first noticed this right after installing the MSN Messenger 6.0 BETA program. I uninstalled the MSN program, but did not notice any improvement in the mouse.
I have noticed the System Resources is at about 59% - 61% when this erratic behavior first begins, down from a fresh boot value of 75%.
Anyone have any ideas?
Thanks, Dwight

Just cuz U didn't notice it doesn't meanit wasn't there before. Upgrade the USB drivers for the motherboard or get a new PCI USB 2.0 card. Perhaps a timing issue. And go into Safe Mode and delete all the drivers and reinstall just to make sure. Sometimes traces or old extras can only be seen in Safe Mode.
Or go with a optical mouse with wheel for 20 from CompUSA by Microsoft. I have 2 MS Optical mice and never had to clean them and they still work.

Thanks, ivnj. Right now I've substituted a PS/2 connected wheel mouse. I uninstalled the USB mouse, then shut down the computer and connected the PS/2 mouse. We'll see if the problem starts again in a couple of hours. By the way, I did remove the USB mouse drivers in Safe Mode earlier, with no change in mouse behavior.
I haven't removed and reinstalled the USB drivers, so I'll do that next. My keyboard is connected via USB, too.

Thanks for the link, koicarp. The PS/2 mouse worked fine, and following ivnj's advice, I uninstalled, then reinstalled the USB drivers. I then un-installed the PS/2 mouse and re-installed the original mouse. It has been 7 hours now and the USB mouse is working great.
Thanks for the help, koicarp & ivnj.
