Hi, I have Win Me, and just did a complete restore. I now have IE 6 SP1. I am getting an error on the advisor with a big red X that says:

UPDQ823559 (details...) Reinstall!

Now I have gone to get this patch installed it, and it stills give me this message in Belarc advisor. What to do?

PS: When I go into the add/remove programs, it is in there. Should I remove it, and install it again. I don't know if the patch was the correct one or not.

Yes, I suggest you uninstall it. When that is complete I suggest you open your Internet Explorer / Tools / Internet Options and delete the Temporary Internet Files as well as the cookies.

When that is complete, go back to the Windows Update site (Internet Explorer / Tools / Windows Update) and look for any critical updates. It should again install the UPDQ823559 file.

This procedure has fixed some systems, but others show the same problem after several attempts.

I have seen this same error on several different machines and I suspect the problem is on the Microsoft side, although this is not specifically mentioned in the Windows Update Troubleshooter page. Troubleshooter

I hope this is of some help.

Sorry for the late response, Dwight. Just been busy trying to get this thing running properly after I completely restored it. What a pain! I did uninstall it, and did all you said. It worked. The update came thru and it is now showing up on the Belarc Advisor as running properly.
Got another question, and I know you've been asked this so many times, but how come I can't get my password to go away at startup? I've tried everything. I changed user profile to All users, and even left all fields blank in changing passwords, and it stills pops up on startup. I've tried to logoff but it will not take, still says to logoff on my start button. What am I doing wrong to disable windows password?

I assume that by your question: "...get my password to go away at
startup?" that you're referring to the box with your username and wanting
your password. You can get around the box by just clicking on "Cancel" or
"OK" without entering a password. But I assume that you would rather just
eliminate the box altogether.

1. Do a search for *.pwl
(the * symbol will search all files with the .pwl suffix. PWL stands for
"Pass Word List".
2. When you find the .pwl file(s) select and delete them.

Assuming that you are not setup with a home network:

3. Then go into your Control Panel and find the "Network" entry.
4. Open it and change your logon from:
"Client for Microsoft Networks"
to
"Microsoft Family Logon""

Restart your computer when prompted. When the login window appears, just click on OK. In some cases you will need to do this on two logins, but the window should go away.

I hope this helps!

Dwight, I have deleted the *.pwl files but they keep on coming back. I also went into the network folder and tried to change it but there is not an option to change it to Microsoft Family Login. Theres just Microsoft Client as well as windows login. When you say assuming I'm not setup for home networking, what do you mean by that? I do have more than one computer hooked up, but we are not sharing any resources besides the broadband. Is that why I'm unable to make the windows logon screen go away? Thanks in advance! Happy HOHO!

Use the Windows Login. That is the same as "Microsoft Family Logon". Delete the .pwl files, then switch the network login. From what you said about sharing an Internet connection then you're not setup with a home network. You don't need the "Client for Microsoft Networks" setup.
