I am wanting to know if I should download an update called: Windows IDE Hard Drive Cache Package. It says it works around the lost of files when the computer adruptly shuts down, and saves it to a temporary memory. I have Win Me, and was wondering if this would hurt or help?

soaringhorse:

I've downloaded every update (except ones that are program specific, and that I don't have ); it couldn't hurt.

WinME was always very problematic and the updates help clear up some of them. I have WinXP Pro and have found the same to be true; the more updates I've installed, the better my PC seems to be running.

I'd say yes, to the update. Wait for a second opinion from one of our experts, as I could be (*gasp*) wrong. It's never happened before, but better not take a chance. LOL

I generally suggest applying an update when it's known to resolve a specific problem with the computer. Here are the situations the drive cache update addresses:

(1) You click Start, Shutdown, and choose "Shut down". When your power up the computer, Scandisk runs.

(2) You click Start, Shutdown, and choose "Restart". The computer hangs and does not restart.

If either of these symptoms occur, installing the update will likely resolve the problem.

I'm sure Tom know what he's talking about more than I do about computers. Myself, I always get the updates from Microsoft. One didn't want to download right and quirked out the computer twice (same download). I rebooted the computer each time with no damage done. I think this problem is probably a rare one though. I think it is a good idea to keep Windows updated. Tom, tell me if I'm wrong!!!

Well, I will try loading it then. Had the weirdest thing happen today when I first started the computer. Needless to say Win Me is always doing something strange, LOL Roll Eyes I had this screen come up saying error, Hibernate did not finish (or something like that) do you want to complete hibernate Y or N. I hit No, but how did it do that, I didn't hibernate my computer, never have! Also after that it took me directly to Windows Update to get a security package for the Windows Media Player which I had already downloaded but I did so again, whatever! Roll Eyes But what I couldn't understand is why it had one critical update listed, yet once I downloaded the media player update it didn't have it, hmmmm, odd. Also it actually bypassed my home page on IE when I had first clicked on the internet. Is that part of the windows update security for IE6 SP1?
