I am running Windows ME, everytime I boot up my system the registry editor window appears open on the desk top.
I have no idea what caused this in the first place, but I'm hoping someone can help. I have been closing it out, but should I send it to another location or what.
I don't have a lot of knowledge about operating computers, so if someone could please reply in laymens terms as what to do, I sure would appreciate it.
Thank you

Click on "Start" then go to the Programs menu and select the "Startup" folder. See if there is a shortcut to the file "regedit.exe". (You may not see the .exe portion of the filename, depending on your setup).

If you see the file listed, select it (with a single click) and then press the delete key. Say "yes" to allow the shortcut to be moved to the Recycle Bin. That will stop it from starting when Windows starts.

If you don't see the "regedit.exe" file listed in the Startup folder, then try this:

(1) Click Start
(2) Click Run
(3) Type
msconfig
(4) Click OK
(5) Click the Startup tab
(6) Look through the list and un-check any line that lists "regedit.exe"
(7) Click "OK"
(8) Restart you computer when prompted

I don't know of any reason this file would just appear in the Startup list. I suggest you update your Anti-Virus software and run a Virus Scan to insure you do not have a virus on your system. If you don't have an up-to-date Anti-Virus program, you can use the Norton Anti-Virus "on-line" checker:

Norton online virus scan

You can read more about using the Microsoft Configuration Utility (msconfig) here:

Using msconfig to control startups

I hope this helps!

Hi Loumere
There is a command to stop this happening again, this will alter the "Properties" of regedit back to their original state But I am not able to tell the exact details because I am running a different version of Windows to you.
The command is called "CMD" but there are several ways of defining how this works(and doing the wrong instuction can cause grief or nothing)
-----------------------------------------------
quote:
CMD Starts a new instance of the command interpreter, Cmd.exe. Used without parameters, cmd displays Windows XP version and copyright information.

Syntax
cmd [[{/c|/k}] [/s] [/q] [/d] [{/a|/u}] [/t:fg] [/e:{on|off}] [/f:{on|off}] [/v:{on|off}] string]

------------------------------------------------
This is a query really for Dwight,TomGL2,Murray S. and Byter will inform them of this question

Dwight, I followed your instructions, trying both ways to find the shortcut to registry editor, with no luck. I did find two files--Registry editor, one says: type of file: file, description: registry editor, the other says: type of file: Registry Entries, opens with Registry Editor.
Any more suggestions?
Thanks,
Marilyn

"I did find two files--"

Where did you find these files? Did you run a virus scanner?

Okay, I understand you have McAfee Online. But did you update the McAfee, then run a manual scan?

This page will explain how to update and do a manual scan with McAfee Online Look under the "Use And Configure Your Product" heading.

Okay, since this problem is not the result of a virus, I suggest the next step is preform a clean boot troubleshooting procedure. Microsoft Knowledge Base Article - 267288 "How to Perform a Clean Boot in Windows Millennium Edition".

When you determine where the startup is coming from, you can disable or remove the item that is causing the regedit.exe file to run at startup.
