I wish to upgrade my memory... I'm running Win. 98SE, (program upgraded to IE6 SP2 from Win. Update program), on a HP Pavilion, model 6563Z, 64MB SDRAM.
I've recieved info. from HP that 256MB is the limit for this system and that I may install one or two 128MB memory cards, (PC100 SDRAM DIMM).
My question- - should I decide to replace the 64MB card, will I lose anything that's in memory now?? Exactly what do these memory cards do? I've been under the impression they only somehow "tweak" what gets stored on my hard drive..Can anyone explain this in detail for me?
I don't want to purchase the second card until I fully understand and take a chance of messing everything up. Thanks for the help!!

Random Access Memory (RAM) memory is what an open program runs in.
"...will I lose anything that's in memory now?"
In terms of data on your hard drive, the answer is "no". RAM memory is different from your hard drive, where all the data on your system is saved.

Increasing your RAM memory is probably the best upgrade you can do to your computer. I would think you will be very happy with the performance improvement.

These sites have more information about RAM and other types of computer memory:

Webopedia: See the links under the acronym definition.

Read about the different kinds of computer memory at How Stuff Works. (Type in: memory)

I suggest you look at this site:
http://www.crucial.com and use their "Memory Upgrades" tool to determine the best memory for your Hewlett-Packard Pavilion 6563Z. I saw the Web price of $26.99 for 128 MB.

I have used Crucial many times and like their service. They also provide excellent instructions for installing the cards. Hewlett-Packard also has good instruction in the manual (usually) and on their Website.

This is the support Home Page for your HP Pavilion 6573Z

I hope this will help!

Dwight I haven't figured out why I feel compelled to hide the fact that I edit these messages...but I do!

If you decide to upgrade to 256MB of RAM, you can sell you 64MB card at a used computer store like:
http://www.computerrenaissance.com/ or donate it to some non-profit organization for a tax credit.

Once again, Thank You Dwight. Your information and site links help tremendously. Needless to say, I'm still learning! In the beginning I started a computer course at the local college~ after 3 weeks I dropped out as I'm almost totally deaf and couldn't understand a thing that was going on. I decided to teach myself~ boy has that been touch and go! (hahaha~ crashed my new computer within the first week!)
I don't know what I'd have done without AJ and now AnswerPool and all you helpful members.

Wishing you a wonderful Holiday Season.
Di
P.S. Donating my used 64MB card is a great idea!

Yes, I have visited both your and Jan's sites. Again, both have been very helpful. I began using your site while we were still using AJ.
Thanks, Di
