I have a Hewlett-Packard CapShare 920 portable scanner and would like to install it on a HP Desktop computer running Windows XP Home Edition. Hewlett-Packard does not make a driver for Windows XP. They do have one for Windows 98 and Windows ME and Windows NT.

My question: What options are there for installing this on the Windows XP system?

Is it possible the driver for Windows NT would work in Windows XP?

Could the Win98 or WinNT driver be modified to work in WinXP by a qualified programmer for a reasonable cost?

Would a "dual boot" setup on the HP Desktop be the best solution (install Win98 on a separate partition)?

Any other options that I haven't considered?

The device connects via a serial cable.

Thanks for any help you can provide.

I tend to find too many registry problems with dual booting but that's just me.

I like keeping a seperate machine around for all the outdated 98 or ME stuff. Might be better that dual booting since it appears U already have the 98 CD. Plus the ammount U pay to get the driver rewritten or a new scanner can be just as much as the below.

See http://66.216.68.88/ and look at the sixth catagory down (Computer Systems).

(IBM PII 400MHz System 64MB 4GB CD VID FDD USB) only $85 for 1. 4.2GB HD and 64MB ram should be enough for outdated stuff. And the only thing missing is the OS and drivers The OS U have and the drivers well... with all the smart people around here.

U can put it right under your monitor and with a cheap switch box U can go back and forth between systems. Cuz with dual boot U'd have to shutdown first.

But that's just my oppinion. I'm sure pelnty of others have a better solution.

Hmmmmm. Well, WindowsXP is built on Windows NT so the drivers for NT have a good chance of working on XP. I didn't see any generic drivers for it so try installing one driver, if that doesn't work, try the other.

Dwight,
Is there any way to install the Win98 driver, and run the scanner program in compatibility mode under win98? Just a random thought. LOL
