Black represents a lack of color, the primordial void, emptiness. It can also mean sorrow or mourning, in the Christian tradition of wearing black to funerals. In this respect it can also symbolize death.

I don't believe any more you have to wear black. We have been to 2 funerals here lately and the mom was not wearing black and either was most of the family including me. I would not wear white.
Wearing black to a funeral represent mourning. It's not traditional anymore, like it used to be. People wear any color to a funeral now. People used to say that it was bad luck to wear red to a funeral, but i see a lot of people wearing red to funerals nowadays.
