I recently stayed at a B&B and was disappointed for three reasons.

  • The room was very cold and there was no way to adjust the temperature.
  • Coffee was not available until 8 AM.
  • The kitchen was off limit to the guests.

    Is this typical of B&Bs?

I have stayed at a few B&B's. My experience has been that the room was very comfortable in temperature. I am not sure what time the coffee was available as opposed to breakfast, but I know that breakfast was available before 8, I think around 7. I do believe that the kitchen was always off limits, but the last place I stayed in had its own refrigerator for guests to keep stuff in, that was accessible at all times.

Over here in the UK, a B/B type hotel is usually very basic but comfortable. They are mostly family businesses who take great pride in making you feel at home. Coffee/tea is usually only available with meals and the kitchens are usually off limits. However this is usually reflected in the price. Basic accomodation for a basic price.Remember you are paying for 'bed and breakfast', nothing else. Some of the more expensive ones have tea/coffee making facilities and fridges.

NC - I've never heard of a B&B having the kitchen open to guests. As for the availability of coffee, etc., it's usually available once breakfast is.
