Last year my husband's car overheated in the middle of winter going up a steep hill. We thought it was the thermostat and replaced it. It still overheats. If you pull the thermostat out it will not overheat. What my question is could it be the head gasket like my husband says or is it the thermostat, or could it be something totally different. That is the only thing that is wrong with it. The water is still working correctly on it. By the way it is a 1996 Chevrolet Lumina.

Overheating can cause the engine's head to warp and allow the head gasket to leak. Looke for signs of oil in the radiator or water in the crankcase. Water in the crankcase will cause the oil to look milky. I can also detect a distinct odor (sorta tar-like) if there is a serious head gasket leak.

You may have purchased the wrong thermostat or installed it backwards. Or there may be a blockage in the cooling system. I would take it to a radiator shop and have them take a look at it.
