1985 Dodge, model 600 (K-Car). 2.2 liter 4 cylinder, fuel injected with turbocharger.

I have a strong smell of raw gas after shutting the engine off. The smell seems to be coming from under the hood, though I don't actually see any leaking fuel. The injectors are located very close to the turbocharger. I can also smell fuel odors through the heater. I believe that one of the fuel injectors is leaking.

I went to NAPA and found a re-manufactured injector for $90. I need to know how to determine which injector is leaking and what the procedure for changing it entails. I had a shop replace one injector last fall, but the cost was very high...around $200 so I would like to do this myself and save the labor costs.

Thank you!

Dwight

I asked my dad for help on this one as he knows alot about automobiles and repair. He says-

Have the injectors checked for pressure and diagnostics on the fuel side. This would run you anywhere from $70-$90. This is the best method.

After this is done, you can change the injector yourself. Difficulty is about medium depending on your knowledge of automobiles.

I would check all the fuel lines first. Start at the tank and work toward the front. It you are getting an odor that strong you should notice a "wet" spot somewhere or at least the evidence of a leak.

Another possibility is that the O-ring which seals the injector is bad. These are much cheaper than the injector, of course. But you should still see signs of the leak. I would definitely perform a thorough visual examination first.

Thank you esencia (and your dad) and thank you teeceeum. I appreciate your help. I will do a more complete inspection before deciding on the next course of action. I should have mentioned that the injectors have an electrical connection, so I guess these would be called "electronic fuel injectors"?

Yeah Dwight. They are controlled by the car's ECU.
