My Ford dealer tells me that in terms of quality regarding the mechanical/electronic side of things, the best car so far made by Ford (in France/Europe) is the Focus, but that the forthcoming replacement for the Mondeo will be even better. Any comments?

Well this might not have to do with anything, but I have had a bad experience with Ford cars. I had an Escort, Taurus, Windstar and they all were very bad cars. I have an F150 now and it seems to be doing okay now. I rented a Focus a couple years ago and it seemed to drive pretty well.
