I was told that you should always use your emergency brake (mine is near the gear shift between the two front seats that you pull up)if you don't use it all the time it will sieze up and you won't be able to use it anymore. Is this true

Thanks

If you NEVER use it, it can stiffen up or even sieze completely,(especially the "between the seats" arrangement, which is more vulnerable to getting debris caught in the works) but it is not neccessary to use it everytime you park... I set mine while the truck warms up with the transmission is in neutral and, naturally, when parking on even a slight incline.

Yes, use it. With regular use it will stay freed up and available should you really needed it.

I did not use mine regularly and spent the better part of a weekend freeing it up. It had stuck in the on position.

On some cars, the emergency brake also helps adjust the rear brake shoes.

The reverse case is also true. If you leave the car with the handbrake full on ("emergency brake"? ConfusedIn what kind of emergency would you ever use it ? )when the car is left parked for a couple of weeks, say when you go on holiday, you may find that it has seized up . This happened to me once when I'd left the car for about three weeks and it took a mechanic with a crow bar to free the rear wheel. Smile

Thats happened to a lot of people I know sticking brake shoes.. Best advice is chock the wheels (and handbrake off) if it is going to be unused for a long time and a few dabs of the brake pedal on your first drive will clear the surface rust

DO not do a normal stop There is a chance a wheel will "Grab" sending the car out of control

Hand brakes boot should be clear of debris Worth lifting it and spraying the pivots with WD-40
Extra tip... And count the clicks it makes above 5 may indicate the shoes need replacing soon or stretched cables?
Bad driving habit, and a driving test fail is to apply the handbrake without pressing the button! Ok on the end of the travel (Worn ratchets and mechanisms are very awkward to fix Mad)

if used all the time the hand brakes will allways work but if you leave the car parked for a long time then they will lock up and you wont be able to release them. so use them all the time then when you park the car for a long time throw a rock under the wheels. and have you brakes check every six months or so Big Grin

Actually, WD40 is not the best choice of lubricant for this application because it tends to attract and hold dust and fine debris and can cause damage to plastic and rubber fittings.
The usual recomendation is to use a dry graphite product.
