we are planning on selling our car, and have no idea at all what to ask.
it is a 1986 chevy spectrum, hatchback, excellent shape, no dents, rust or cracks/chips in any of the windows, interior has one small cigarette stain on the back seat, but other than that its in near new condition. it runs really well (a little slow on hills), with no mechanical problems that we know of. its a standard.
anyone have a general price range that we should ask?
Lynda, try THIS site. You enter your information and it will give you the amount you can expect to receive from a private sale. You need to enter a zip code, so use pretty much anything in the US. The dollars will also be in US, so you would have to adjust accordingly.
There may be other sites out there as well, but this is the Kelly Blue Book value...
What I would do is check the news paper ads to see what the going price in your area is.
This will give you a good starting price. Then you can ajust higher or lower as you figure your car is worth.
Remember, unlike dealer sales, people expect to barter a little on the price so be a little high. Not so high to scare off prospective buyers.
Also, don't be afraid to take offers so if you don't find someone willing to pay your price, you can go back to there to see if they are still interested.
Good luck
