With all the screaming and rantings of the US using so much oil, why is it that LP gas hasn't been more widely used than it is...
I know of many Police Dept. that have used it for years in their patrol cars with excellant results...
Also, almost every fork lift I see is LP powered...
Anyone know why????

Propane isn't as conveniently available as gasoline.

It is expensive to convert an automobile engine to run on propane, although the engine will last longer and require less maintenance. This would be good for a fleet owner, but the average American doesn't keep a car long enough to reap the benefits.

Dollar for dollar, gasoline gives better gas mileage.

What Gar said plus

It is easy for a car engine to run on LP but LP is a GAS in the full sense of the word. For a car to carry enough LP to run for 200 miles before filling up, it has to be put under pressure to liguefy. This fuel tank has to hold this pressure with out a danger of exploding.

Like Gar said, for fleet operations OK but not for the short time we keep cars and the small amount we use.

Besides, where do you think LP gas comes from? Liquefied PETROLEUM Gas.

LP burns cleaner and gives off less noxious fumes is it's only advantage. In Cleveland OH where I live, we have cabs and buses running on LP. I would rather follow one of them the a diesel bus.

Tip of MY day. Off the subject I know but worth sharing.

To find how much LP you have for that Bar-B-Q, boil some water. Pour it down the side of your tank. Pour at the top and let it run down one side. Now carefully, it could be hot, starting at the bottom, feel the tank where you poured the water, slowly moving your hand to the top.

If it's hot at the bottom, the tank is almost or is emty. The line where you feel the cool line suddenly change to warm or hot is the
"Liquid/vapor" separator line. The higher this line on the side of the tank, the more fuel you have. Pressure in the tank will never tell you how much fuel you have until it is emty.

Cause- the liquid pulls the heat away faster then vapor. Therefore where it is cool, there is liquid. A totally full LP tank will only be cool about 3/4 the way up the tank. They never fill them to the top, This leaves room for expansion. They fill them by weight. A full cylinder for the grill weighs 20lbs. + the emty weight of the tank. This weight is stamped on the tank as "Tare" weight.

in Sri Lanka where i live, petrol engines are coverted to LPG since LPG is cheaper than petrol. Here LPG is 60% of Petrol price. But what i really want to know is if converting to LPG is really worth it? cos i think lpg runs lesser mileage than petrol. and the car has to carry an extra weight of the lpg tank, which looks quite heavy. how about engine ware and tare?
they say lpg convertion works good only for engines with carb. Not with fuel injection. whay is that? but i've seen EFI cars also converted to gas. tell me why it is so.
let me know what u think on converting petrol engines to lpg.
