My Dodge model 600 has a fuel leak near the right rear tire. Just forward of the tire, there is what I think is a fuel filter. The picture shows the unit, the leak is where the tube connects.

This is just forward of the right rear tire.

My question is; What is this part? What is the cost to replace?

This is a fuel injected, turbo charged 4 Cylinder 2.2 Liter engine.

Anything else you may be able to tell me about this is appreciated.

Thanks,
Dwight

Dwight: It does indeed look like the fuel filter. The part itself is not expensive, but I think what the real problem is might run into a bit of money. Usually what happens is the fuel line begins to rust and eventually will seize the fitting on the fuel filter. The fuel line may have already developed some rust pin holes, which may be the source of your leak, however it could be the filter itself. In attempting to change the filter you will of course have to disturb the fuel lines which may cause them to start leaking as well. Many times the lines will not release from the filter and it will need to be cut off. From your picture I would suggest replacing the lines and the filter both. The amount of fuel line that requires replacing will determine the cost of the repair. If you are going to do it you can buy bulk line and bend it accordingly, but just be very careful as I'm sure you know you are dealing with a tremendous fire risk. If you aren't certain then I would strongly suggest letting someone do it that has done it before. There's no sense in hurting yourself, or worse, to save a couple of hundred bucks.

Sae said it all....(I'd give his posting 5 stars if I was on Answerpoint)
From the look of the photograph that fuel line looks perished where it goes over that filter (It needs replacing right away) Dont even think of starting it up frown You may give yourself Hot Pants!!!?? eek
If you do order a new fuel line replace the entire length from the fuel filter to the engine compartment with an "Armored" rubber type.
PS Is that the exhaust muffler I see below the pipe?
If that is so who routed the fuel pipe touching the muffler? that is asking for trouble.... red face

I tried tightening the clamp, but that made no difference...it is still leaking.

There is a lot of rust in that area and I think you're right, the line and filter case (if that is what it is) should be replaced. By the way bedstor, that is not the muffler, but rather a portion of the under-body. The muffler is on the other side of the vehicle.

This is more of a job than I'm willing to tackle, so I guess Anchorage Chrysler gets some more of my money!

I sure appreciate both of you for your advice!

Dwight

With the *help of my next door neighbor, the fuel filter (NAPA part #3463) and the two rubber fuel lines were replaced. This exposed the real problem, exactly as diagnosed by sae501...rust pit holes in the metal fuel line. We bought a long enough rubber line to "over-wrap" the holes in the metal line as a temporary measure. For now the leak is fixed, but I will have Anchorage Chrysler replace the metal fuel line this week.

Again, "thanks" to both sae501 and bedstor for your kind assistance.

Dwight

*Who am I kidding? Paul did the work, while I handed him tools...Thank God for generous and kind people!

Don't slight yourself, Dwight. Look how important surgical nurses are. Where would the surgeon be without them to hand the proper instruments? Hmmmm?
