Here I am again....

Now all of a sudden - three time in the past week - the above light has come on for no apparent reason - dry pavement, slow speed, etc. All three time when turning a fairly hard left - out of a parking place & at stop signs. It goes right out, but it concerns me eventhough the owner's manual says there is a problem only if the light stays on. Any suggestions out there in the pool? Thanks in advance folks Smile

Must say, I'd follow the owner's manual.

I've a Merc. If I stopped the car and drove slowly to a garage every time a light came on or flashed I'd be doing nothing else. They don't stay on for long.A yellow one did, but it 'cured' itself the next time I drove the car. I don't know what one of them means.Perhaps I should ring the garage to find out, out of curiosity Smile My Skoda has the same tendency. One of the lights on that indicated, according to the manual, 'stop the car and drive slowly to the nearest agent', so I did. The mechanic solved the problem in moments, saying 'It should stay off now, but if it comes on again, ignore it !' which seemed suitably sanguine Smile

Or you could follow my father, an engineer all his life.Teaching me to drive, he said 'That little red light is the oil indicator. It comes on and goes off on starting. If it comes on when you're driving that means 1) you need new oil or 2) you need a new engine or 3) you need a new litle red light assembly. The last is the likeliest!' Big Grin

im kinda behind here , but check your tire air pressures it has a lot to do with everything your tire do. ill bet one is low on air. you need a good quality air gauge (not a cheap one)
and check the presure of each tire (including spare) do this once a week at least.
i know people dont want to but with todays auto you must. also the presure will change from cold tires to warm tires MAKE sure you check them when cold. give then a couple hours to cool down.

dc - I've checked the tires and have even reset the tire monitoring circuitry to no avail. Any other thoughts?

My guess is its Differential related If the Vehicle has a Limited slip Diff These are Sometimes electronically operated and Still guessing there is a Road Wheel speed sensor fitted to each side connected to the activation box for the Diff

Hence your "warning" 1 of the sensors is faulty
on a 4WD there will be 4 of these
May also indicate a possible oil seal leak on the Inboard driveshaft. and the sensor is feeling fresh air!
Have you tried the "Knock on lock" test?
Drive around an empty parking lot at full lock @ walking pace to 10 mph MAX A driveshaft if its faulty will "Knock" DO it Both ways and the Knock on the outside of the circle will be the side you will have to look at Smile

See this to get a better idea

Same may apply to these sensor Issues

Here are the details of the things I mentioned earlier and the Job involved to Inspect and replace the wheel sensor (I guessed right Smile)
It seems a common fault as there are several Topics on this subject Frown

I was also correct on the Diff sensor too (You can disregard that)

i just reread your post you say it goes right out after a hard turn. then that is normal its telling you your flexing a tire and the pressure changes . do your make hard turns all the time or is this just part time. could also be differential like was said above tire slipage will also show up. try not turning the wheel till it locks (till it wont turn no more) my quess is your turning the wheel till it wont turn no more then aplying more presure. that will also be a trouble code Big Grin

dodgecity - no I don't make a lot of hard left turns and not to the limit (lock) either - just a harder left than you would make during normal driving. So far this seems to only happen during start up (forward) at slow speed then goes away after accelerating and straighting up. A more gradual turn (or none at all) at start up does NOT activate the warning light though.

After reading your reply
A suggestion It could the Diff oil level is low and When you corner It will expose the Contact for the Traction Light? Have had a few Oil filter lights flicker at tickover Roll Eyes and topping up the level did the trick
PS If you let it go too far then the Crown wheel (the Main internal Part) will get noisy (is a precision Part). Big UK Built Fords used to have problems in this area in the 70's

Since this doesn't seem to be a 'terminal' ailment, I've been turning the traction control OFF when starting to move the car and turning it back on when under way. Seems to be working alright (as far as I can tell). I'll be back if anything else further happens.

it could very well be oil level and or a bad sensor. have you contacted the dealer to see if there are problems with that model. could be a computer related problem too.

dodgecity - no recalls or other publications by GM - not that they would be eager to help considering their state of affairs today.

I (my mechanic actually) replaced both front wheel hubs and their associated sensors and the problem is gone. It wasn't as costly as I had envisioned, so maybe I'll keep the old girl a bit longer. Thanks for all the suggestions! Smile
