My son has been a pretty good kid, no drugs, good grades, and hasn't gotten into trouble. He's sixteen now, and has this temporary license. I am now having the joyful task of teaching him how to drive. He's pretty good so far, more apprehensive than anything, respects the gas pedal, and doesn't try to speed (Wonder how long that one will last?) My question is this, he is not getting the braking system down, they are those anti-lock brakes, and I'm practically getting whiplash due to the complete stops, they are making my head jerk forward. This is not good due to me having about 4 accidents, (none my fault) which each time worsened my neck and back injury. So how do you teach him to gradually use the brakes? I know power brakes are different, and he's not pumping the brakes, just hitting them hard. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

why not go into an empty car parking lot at a time when there is no traffic and few cars. Have him experiment with the breaks, that is see what happens at the lightest pressure on them.. get him used to FEELING what the car is doing.
That is how I taught myself how to drive a clutch/standard.. I FELT how the car would "pull" when I slowly released the clutch with my foot.
You need to have him FEEL the car not DRIVE it .... that is he is not only operating a vehicle but also monitoring what it is doing with his own body and senses...
I don't know if that helps, but it is a slow process going from a task-oriented to a sense-oriented way of driving.. being more in tune with how the car feels while he is operating it.

He has drove in the parking lots, pretty much. And I think he's getting used to the car, I even had him on the interstate and he drove us all the way home. He does fairly well, even backing into my driveway, which is a little tricky. I thik he's just midjudging his distance when it's time to stop. God, this is a trip. Now I know how my step dad felt when he taught me, lol. Thanks for the input Sherasi, I'm about to venture nite driving, and then its going to be rush hour time. That one is going to be hard on me, he always ask when I get off of work, so I keep putting it off, until I think he's ready. I also want to show him about the rain and how it affects the roads, makes them more slick, but we'll do that one in a little private area. Tree, love that site! Has good info on it. Soaringhorse
