My dad has a Mazda 626 that he's fixing for my daughter. He's wanting to know how to adjust the idle speed to about 900 RPMS. It's running at about 400 and won't stay started when stopped.

There is an adjustment screw near the throttle body that controls how far the butterfly will close. Turning the screw in will adjust the idle speed upwards. But the problem may be more serious than a simple adjustment will cure.

Okay TC...he did that, but it won't stay put. It keeps on going back down to about 400 RPM's. It dies when you stop. How can he make it stick there?

Ok. I asked my dad for help on this one since he knows alot about cars.

He wants to know if it has a ditrubutor or an electronic ignition.

If it is an electronic ignition, you need to put it on a machine for the computer to corolate the throttle idle.

If it is a distributor, try advancing the timing a little bit, up to idle.

He says that if it is a `94, then chances are it has an electronic ignition. He says in that case, you would probably need to take it to a dealer because it is the computer and it needs to be adjusted by them.

Or it could be the oxygen sensor. If the oxygen sensor doesn't detect enough oxygen in the exhaust, then it leans out the fuel mixture. Essencia is right about taking ot to a mechanic who has electronic diagnostic equipment.
