With 51K on the car and if have never had the brake pads replace, my bet is that squeal you are hearing is the ware indicator on the pads telling you it’s time. Sometimes this noise can only be heard when you apply the brakes. Then there are times that once it start, it continues until the pads are changed.
I don't know for sure when they started putting disc brakes on all cars, but I am sure that your 2002 will have disc brakes on the front. Some cars even have them on the rears.
For the mechanically minded, front brake pads are pretty easy. Just pick up a copy of Chiltons service manual for your car. You may even find it at you local library. If you are not, leave them to the pros. Don’t bet your life, or mine, on brakes that are not installed properly.
If you do your brakes, replace the rotors also. Some will say just to turn them if there is metal available, but I have found the cost of turning rotors verses the cost of NEW rotors is so close, why take a chance. I have had some bad experiences with turned rotors. Pulsating brakes, vibrations, and grabbing brakes.
It is also a good idea to replace the brake fluid at this time. The fluid is “Hygroscopic” meaning that it wants to absorb moisture from the air. This moisture can cause problems with the workings of the brakes by rusting internal parts.
Would love to make a trip to Louisiana, but I don't work for beer and I don't think I can afford the trip at this time.
