There is no dipstick on a manual transmission. You have to go under the car and remove the plug on the side of the gearbox. Stick your little finger in the hole and see if it comes back with oil on it. Any instant oil change place can check it and top it off for you.
On my 1989 Pontiac Grand Am there is a dipstick to check the tranny fluid. Now maybe its just because its newer or Ive been putting tranny fluid in the wrong place... but then so would my mom and dad would have been....

In 40 years of messing with cars I've never seen a dipstick on a manual transmission. Since it doesn't operate on hydraulics, fluid level for an manual transmission isn't critical. And the 90 weight oil used in manual gearboxes would be very difficult to get to flow down that skinny little tube.
I'm not saying that someone hasn't put a dipstick on a manual transmission. I'm just saying that I have never seen one.
