Is it only true in my area of the midwest, or do Honda dealers all over have a policy of not "dealing" with customers. If you plunk cash down in front of them here, they will not move off of their price. Could it be that they figure they'll sell the car to someone else, so they don't mind if you walk out of the showroom?

Market forces ultimately determine the price of automobiles in the United States. Some vehicles are so hot that they actually sell above list price. The VW Beetle and the PT Cruiser (when introduced, at least) fell into this category. Some dealers - Saturn dealers, for example - have no bargaining power, the prices have been set at a supposedly fair and reasonable level by the manufacturer.
Hondas are notoriously reliable cars that are priced slightly lower than, say, the comparable Toyota. They turn over well at their dealerships and price negotiation can be difficult, as you have discovered. Of course, you dont have to have one if the price is unfair.
Some people like to buy cars because they like to "win" the negotiation and proclaim to all of their friends about the good deal they got!
In a big about-face from negotiations of the past, plunking down cash can hurt your case. Many dealers have incentives to provide financing for their sales.
