Have about 120K on my Saturn. Used Slick 50 when new and again around 60k so ready to do it again. Any suggestions on which brand to use this time?

Slick 50 really doesn't do you much, if any good. All you're getting is some 50 weight oil mixed with teflon. Teflon is a SOLID. Thus, it has no business in your engine. Even Dupont, inventor of teflon, says so. It's more likely clogging your oil filter and engine passages than helping you. If you change your oil and filter on the proper intervals, you really shouldn't need any additive. If you still want to put something in, try a quart of Rislone this time. It should get rid of any sludge in the engine and clean any places where the teflon is clogging the system. It is one of those products to be used in large intervals, such as your Slick 50 usage.

Switching your oil to Mobil1 and installing a K&N air filter would be my recomendations. My husband is devoted to Mobil1 synthetic products, and his devotion has rubbed off on me. They are pricey, but our '88 Honda Civic has over 300 thousand miles on her and runs like a top!
K&N air filters are simply the best available and come with a million mile warranty...you will not buy another air filter for your car as long as you own it. Look for the K&N demo at your local parts store, you will be amazed.

I agree with the other posts about Slick 50. There's far more potential for harm that good with any additive product containing solids.

As for Mobil 1, it is an excellent product and great for use in extreme driving conditions (short trips around town qualifies as an extreme condition). However it and other synthetic oils are no more effective or efficient than freshly installed, premium petroleum-based motor oils. They gain their advantage in longevity, that is they don't break down as quickly as conventional oils. The cost difference is quite extreme - about $4.50/qt. vs. $1.50/qt. for approximately twice the life of conventionals. Whether you want to spend that much is entirely up to you and the way you drive.

And on a final note, it is not necessary to change the oil in your vehicle every 3,000 miles. Most manufacturers these days call for oil change intervals of 10,000 to 15,000 miles. Personally I am not comfortable going that long between changes and I use an interval of 6,000 - 7,000 miles. My truck just hit 275,000 miles using that schedule.

(My confession: I once owned a car which I put over 130,000 miles on and never changed the oil. I sold the car to a mechanic who pulled the valve covers and reported to me that it was the cleanest engine on a used car that he had ever seen.)

Boy some good answers! Oil brakes down from temperature over time. Oil at high temperatures will have shorter life than oils at lower temperatures. On average for average driving this works out to about 7,000 miles.
But the other thing to consider is the contaminants that get in the oil. The oil is not fed completely into the filter then to the engine! About 10% to 15% of the oil is filtered. The rest is fed to the engine from the by pass valve. So the oil is never completely filtered.
So the combination of oil brake down and the contaminants create more friction and wear!

I tried Slick 50 a few years ago. My experience with Slick 50 wasn't so good. My car already had an oil leak. It leaked a lot more after the Slick 50 application. Went from one quart to eight quarts between oil changes.

SInce then, I haven't tried any other such products. Been afraid of the same thing happening again. frown

Thank you all. I must confess to not changing the oil as often as I should. The Slick did seem to help when I put it in at 3k but not at 60K. Cars runs very good. Guessing at the milage for the last year but it is mine till it dies - hopefully not till the next century.

Having read other replies I thought i should offer my comments ! All the suggestions here are good with the exception of synthetic's . They are hard to beat if used in the right application. But in cars that don't see any long hours of use they will do more harm than good ! Syn's must run at a long period for any water to be burned off, if a car has short runs, water will collect in the oil and can do some damage! And unless you are dedicated to the higher cost of oil changes you will inveribly add a mineral oil at some point and then you can expect a great deal of damage! My recomendation is as the other's have suggested, change that oil every three thousand miles ! cool
