The problem here is I don't know the symtoms you had with your transmission. Even then it is a guess.
Next, I put, no offence everyone, transmission service companies on the same scale as lawyers. You never konw what their up to.
$800 sounds reasonable to rebuild an automatic trans. High if a manual. A little low if a front wheel drive as you have to pull the engine to repair on some cars. Have you checked with the Better Business Bureau to see if there are any complants on this company? Do they come recommended or did you just pick a convenent shop.
Now I am not saying that this is true in your case but I have heard of shops the will charge for rebuilding and all that was needed is adjustments. There's even one shop in Cleveland the just swaped tranies with a cleaned up use one.
Yeah, they guaranteed it but it was a chance they took and at the price they charged, even if they had to change it out again, they still made money.
It is real easy to "Talk it up" with the customer when he can't get a second opinion and has no knowledge of what is happening in side that case.
Hope this help and welcome to the Pool.
