I would like to know why if you don't own a car and are not driving that you have to still have car insurence??? Someone I know hasnt driven in about six months since her car got wrecked. She now got a new one and went to get car insurence and they put her in a high risk catagory cause she had no insurence for six months... Is this just the state oh Ohio maybe that does this? This is awful..They told her by law she is susposed to still carry some bond or
..sound to me just another way to make more money for nothing??? Mad

If this is the system ...well, it sure stinks. Or does this only happen in blondesville! Roll Eyes

OMG Sammy, that is happening to me right now. I didn't know that you had to have insurance on your car if it wasn't running Mad So I let it drop. I got stopped when I got my truck and the cop said I had a suspended license for driving without insurance (and that was like a year before this! Mad) Now, I have to keep insurance on myself, no matter what, or lose my license again. Mad

IT REALLY PISSES ME OFF!!! MadMadMad

Them's are the rules. If you haven't been insured, you are considered a risk. I agree, it may not make much sense to us layfolk, but ask your insurance agent to explain it to you.

Sam, I don't think the homeowners insurance question is valid. Where would you live if you sold your house before buying another? Most people go straight from one house to another -and from one car to another, too, for that matter.

Doesn't seem fair, does it? But here is how the insurance companies look at it.

If you once had insurance and now don't and you go to get a new policy the companies will view this as either:
1. You've been driving w/out insurance which we all know is a big no-no.....or

2. Your policy has been cancelled by the previous insurer.

So you have now been labeled a "High Risk" driver. Carrying continuous coverage definately affects your ability to get a policy.

When my car was not running I filed a Non-Op certificate with the DMV and called up my insurance agent, who suspended my insurance for the three months that my car was out of commission....the premium I had paid was held over until I reactivated the policy. Lots of times just staying in touch with your agent can save you some money and lots of headaches

rip off?
both matt AND my mom are paying for a claim matt had in her van 4 years ago.
2 seperate insurance places, mom is paying because she had a claim on her insurance, matt is paying because he has a claim on his record.
we have dropped the insurance all together, we used to just have fire/theft on our car which just sits on the driveway. it takes another 2 years until the accident is dropped from matts insurance rates, and he will be starting out as high risk again, regardless of whether we have had insurance on the car or not.
so we dropped the $26 a month for the car.
its not a lot, but its not helping ANYWAY so why bother?

Ohio started a law awhile back that you have to show proof of insurence. First of all when ever anyone gets tags they don't show proof just sign something saying they do. So whos to know? Then susposedly if you are caught driving with out any insurence then you lose your license. Well, a drunk driver hit my parents months ago and put dad in the hospital for awhile. Now he finally went to trial and they re instated his license with his proof of insurence before the court date somehow..Now my brother found out about this and threw a fit and had his license revolked and now personal charges have also been filed on this...but, my thing is why would they hand them back their license anyway? If my brother was not a lawyer then nothing would have been done.
