I own a 2001 VW Jetta. It is terrible in the snow.
I would like to trade in. Any suggestions for
a good front wheel drive car that is great in the
snow. Live in PA so only need to worry about
this a few times a year. Would prefer a car over
an SUV. Also looking for a car under $20M.

Have I gotta car for you! Toyota Matrix. They have a front wheel drive version, and all wheel drive version, and a front wheel drive with a high performance engine, (Celica engine), with 6 speed transmission. I test drive new cars for much of my job and I've got to say this is one of the most fun and best handling cars out there, for the price.

In your price range, you should be able to locate a used Saab....I personally have little experience with this make, but here in Montana, where snow and ice are a major fact of life, you see Saabs of all vintages all over the place and my husband swears that his dad's Saab was the best car they ever had for the conditions and fun to drive, in the bargain.

Is your car really that bad in the snow? I woudn't want to spend that kind of money if it only snows a few times a year. None of the cars are that great. Rear wheel drive is the worst, but we drove them for years. I think that I have owned every type of vehicle except a semi.

The difference I have noticed between a rear wheel drive and front wheel drive is with rear wheel, the rear end tends to fish tail on you. Go very light on the gas. The front wheel is a lot better, but you already have that. The four wheel drive is only good for not getting stuck at a complete stop. That's all. So don't get too cocky and think this thing will do what they show you in a tv ad. They drive just the same once moving. Be sure you have antilock brakes, the best safety feature.

Personally speaking, I don't think you are going to find a grand improvement over what you have. Since you don't get much snow, maybe you aren't so good at driving in it. I know it scares me to death. I only drive in it when I have to.

I suggest that your problem is tires, not the car. The only advantage that front wheel drive offers is that the majority of the car's weight is over the driven wheels therefore providing more traction. I suggest that you check out www.tirerack.com to determine what tires might be best for your application.

I agree with Teeceeum. A good set of snow tires will improve your traction in the snow better than anything else.
