Hi, I recently had a new balljoint fitted, I was told that once that had been done the laser tracking would need doing as the work being done was fairly substantial and things may have become uneven etc. After having this work done a couple of days later I then had the trackrod end fitted to the same side. However I am unsure as to whether the tracking was done again. Would it have needed doing? I have felt what i think is a small vibration in the steering wheel lately however it may be just me being paranoid Razz Would the tracking have needed doing?

Any help greatly appreciated.

Welcome to Answerpool
Vibration through steering column...
Depending on which way it happens could be many locations, check the column has no play when pulled and pushed ( bracket fixings loose under dashboard?) Play in steering this is normal about quarter of an inch maximum, but more then the steering gear is junk (or the steering box mounts are Loose)
Other play in the steering and Speed vibration you can drive past points to Kingpin wear(old cars up to mid 70's)Suspension leg top mount bearing wear.
Or on some old cars the welding gets corroded and the leg collapses!! Frown MOTs are very strict on this Frown
The other cause could point to a wheel bearing on its way out (have to jack up the car and see if there is excessive play by rocking the road wheel, and also if the brake disk is showing an unusual wear pattern or is getting thin on one side.
You'd think they would have given an inspection
after this work (as above)to tell you if your car was fit to drive..I'll bet when the Mot test comes around they'll spot what the "Experts" missed May be worth submitting it for one of those "dummy Mot" checks if somebody does one locally? and it will put your mind at rest.I like those garages where they do let you see what they are doing Not "stay there" and they disappear with your car and make a long list of "faults" and quote you some stupid price for "fixing" them. The Main dealers are the worst on this practice

I have been doing MOT repair work for years (although not a qualified Mechanic) So I'm aware of the things that are looked at. And seen some bad vehicles that the owner expect to pass this test with flying colours Mad(which as you and I know is NOT a certificate of roadworthiness as stated on it)
PS My Brother in law is a MOT Tester Razz
