Is there an additive for car engines that will really reduce the noise of a valve tap ? Or are they just a waste of time and money ?

I have used Engine RestoreĀ® for that purpose and it has worked very well. It's not a permanent fix, of course. You probably need to have a lifter(s) replaced.

Marvel Mystery Oil....... wonderful stuff for old engines. In fact, its wonderful for a lot of things. Look for the red can with a label that looks like it was printed in 1936.

sae, thanks for reminding me. You're absolutely right. It is wonderful stuff. I'm afraid I'm almost old enough to remember when that can looked "contemporary". That's probably why I didn't think of it first.

A squirt of Techron (USA) or Redex (UK) in the fuel tank just before every oil change will help keep your fuel injectors unclogged.(upper cylinder lubricant) OK for keeping valve guides lubricated, also in a strange way helps reduces your engine "coking up"/carbon buildup on cylinder head & piston crowns(in the long run)
Quite often. "Noisy" valves are caused by a growth (bulge) of carbon on the valve stems which is only cleaned/ removed should a overhaul of the cylinder head be required about every 25000 miles ? but often overlooked until something breaks, putting this stuff every couple of fill ups will break up the soot sticking on the valve stems and exhaust ports, only visible sign is you may? have some black/grey smoke out of your muffler, if you "floor" the accelerator hard (but not much) clears after about a drive
Quite cheap to buy about $2-$3 cool
Ps: don"t be tempted to put the complete contents of the tin (only a tiny tin) in your tank (a mate of mine did this) You'll end up "smoking" the neigborhood out!! eek (good for a laugh though big grin ) I used to do a similar stunt with the oil pump on a 2 stoke motorbike, open the throttle wide and pull the control cable to the pump wide, thus creating a huge white cloud (I'd be somewhere inside it, Could only hear the bikes engine revving big grin If you weren't used to seeing a 2 stoke at full throttle ,people would panic , perhaps phone the police, happened to friends frown
