I've mulled this one over for ages and I'm sure others have too. I think the lack of an answer is due to the fact that the clue is just too vague. "Paid off the (gold) prospectors" would fit, but I shouldn't think that's the answer. Or "Laid off the prospectors", though I doubt that's what's being looked for either.
"Gold Cup win disappoints" is similarly lacking in satisfaction (the Gold Cup is one of two major horse-races at Ascot and Cheltenham in the UK), though all three possibilities are certainly 'possible'. I could go on, but there just isn't any one answer that makes me think "Yes! That's it!"
Where do all your questions come from Bubs, and don't you ever get any answers supplied by your source?
Do keep them coming nonetheless - we all love 'em!!
