Don't know if that's the right answer , I found this on a web site!
What was the first thing he did? He demanded $7-million, which was an enormous sum in 1971. It was such an outrageous thing to do, to risk everything after such a hard-won victory, that it made even Coppola snap. He sent Pacino a draft version of the script of The Godfather that began with Michael Corleone's funeral, and Pacino got the hint. He backed down to a salary of5-million and made the movie that turned him into the hottest Hollywood property of his day.

Sorry. That story is about GF 3. It would make no sense to pay an unknown actor $5 mil for a role, when many others had auditioned for that role. More than one actor negotiated himself out a a GodFather role. Castellano lost weight to play himself as a young man, and Clemenza "died " before the opening of GF2. . ("That was no heart attack!" Willie Cicci) Robert Duvall, about whom I have heard mostr of the above story, wanted too much money, reportedly as much as Pacino, to do GF3. His character, Tom Hagen, 'died' ala Clemenza, in events before GF3 opens.
